Barclays Financial Sponsors Group
Anyone with insight on the exit opps, culture, and overall strength of FSG at Barclays? How does it compare to other coverage groups at the firm and other FSG groups on the street?

It's one of the top groups at Barclays. Probably the hardest group to get into due to the small size
I love working with them - everyone is super nice and really easy to work with. FS deals are my favorite.
Can confirm, there were 3-4 interns in last year's summer analyst class and it's about the same for the full time class sizes.
heard the head of sponsors sits in chicago - any thoughts on that office?
No, he doesn't. Both Global and Americas group heads sit in NYC.
i've heard they don't do that much modeling and technical work often and that it's more like relationship work because many barclays group do M&A in house within their groups and don't always rely on sponsors that being said like its still like a great group and as above said hard to get in because like not many spots
Interesting, I've heard they're one of the few FSG groups that actually do their own modeling. I figured most of the sponsor deals were handled by FSG solo.
ya like this is like what I thought also!! but my friends dad is an MD in a top group there and he was basically like shi**ing on sponsors because he didn't feel like they did much for their group and like they're mainly "relationship managers"
This is 100% wrong. The FSG team built the LBO template and literally models on every single deal they do because it’s a LBO.
Some other firms have FSG teams that don’t model and LF does modeling, but this definitely not the case at Barclays.

The sponsors team does the LBO paydown model for internal credit committees when you're raising capital for a client that's sponsor backed. They do NOT do M&A modeling, creating sellside models for live processes, etc. (i.e., anything that would get sent to a client or prospective buyers) – that's always handled by the respective coverage group.
Really really good, top 5 on the street for sure, but good luck getting in unless you go to 1 of 2 specific schools
i.e. Yale.
Is that for networking purposes? How important is strength of resume/PE background?
like once you get the offer unless like you're a superstar it really helps to just be from one of a few schools
best working hours 10am - 9pm on most days as they generally do more relationship management work. Good group if that is what you want, but I do not recommend for analyst as you don't do much modeling. THe group is no.3 in terms of fees last year though.
Do you know which groups were in top 5 fees?
Industrials, FSG, P&U, NR, HC are top 5. Not 100% sure on FIG, HC, CR - they are between 4-6 though.
Thanks!!!! Do you know anything about rankings of TMT and M&A?
they have no dedicated M&A team (except the exclusive sales team that works on smaller M&A deals) - all done within coverage group. TMT is number 7 last year - along with RE, TMT is one of our weakest
Does LA office run model?
Can confirm the LA team runs the model.
Barclays FSG takes 4-5 in NYC and 3 in LA every year. Small group and tough to get into. The group runs the LBO models on deals and this places pretty much every analyst in the group for PE.
