BDO to Investment banking

Got some grad offers at deloiite sydney  and Bdo brisbane in advisory, not in their transactions department tho. But my end goal is to work in investment banking.

Obviously, moving through deloitte is the better option, but BDO is in my hometown, and I would rather stay in brisbane for a couple of years, save money to buy an apartment, and use that time move into a Bdo's deals team and then move into Investment banking  in sydney. Is this feasible or am I crazy lol?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights:

  1. Feasibility of Moving from BDO to Investment Banking:

    • Networking: It's crucial to build a strong network within the industry. This can be done by attending industry events, connecting with professionals on LinkedIn, and seeking mentorship from those already in investment banking.
    • Experience: Gaining relevant experience in BDO's deals team can be a stepping stone. Transitioning from advisory to the deals team will provide you with the necessary skills and exposure to transactions, which are highly valued in investment banking.
    • Location: While staying in Brisbane might be more comfortable and financially beneficial in the short term, Sydney offers more opportunities in investment banking. However, starting in Brisbane and later moving to Sydney is a feasible plan if you strategically plan your career moves.
  2. Comparing Deloitte and BDO:

    • Deloitte: Offers a more direct path to investment banking due to its larger network and more significant presence in the financial services industry. Working in Sydney with Deloitte could provide more immediate opportunities to transition into investment banking.
    • BDO: While it might take longer to transition into investment banking from BDO, it is not impossible. The key is to gain relevant experience and leverage your network to make the move.
  3. Career Path Strategy:

    • Short-term: Start with BDO in Brisbane, focus on moving into their deals team, and gain as much relevant experience as possible.
    • Long-term: Plan to transition to Sydney, either by moving within BDO or by leveraging your experience to apply directly to investment banking roles in Sydney.

In summary, while moving through Deloitte in Sydney might be a more straightforward path, starting with BDO in Brisbane and transitioning later is a feasible plan if you are strategic about gaining relevant experience and building your network.
