been told of opening in a group - too forward to send email/linkedin to random person in the group?

One of my contacts has told me that a certain group is hiring, but he does not know anyone in that group personally. I found people on linkedin who say they work in that group. Would it be too direct to send that person a linkedin message with my resume expressing my interest in the position, or atleast asking him/her to introduce me to the staffer/hiring manager in that group? what would you do in such a situation?

thanks
