Being hired into a group that will be restructured
What does it mean in terms of job security if you're starting FT next year in a part of the business that the bank says it will restructure and wind down? Will they just cancel the contract I just signed?
That's a unique situation... how did you receive news that it was going to restructure? Usually the bottom rung isn't as affected by these changes.
It was on the news a day after I signed the contract. I'm the only person that's being hired into that group, if that matters.
If the group is slowly being killed off, that could mean some serious trouble. If it is trimming the fat, you should be fine as an incoming analyst.
Are you close to anyone there? I would recommend speaking to someone about it, if you have a comfortable enough relationship.
I don't think it's being killed off, the group is too important for that, but it has been struggling the past year. The team is quite big at the moment, and very top heavy, hardly anyone below VP. I don't feel comfortable enough to ask people whether I should be worried, and I doubt they'd give me a straight answer anyway.
I would imagine in a top heavy group, coming in as an analyst is the safest place to be. Hard to imagine a top heavy group announcing cuts and starting with an incoming analyst. But, as is mentioned above, talking with a close junior level contact is a good idea to get a feel for your prospects with this firm 2/3/4 years down the line as you look to progress up the ranks.
I mean no one can say you're safe for sure, but analysts are cheapest, and therefore usually last to go.
