Best Days to Politely Ask Bankers for Coffee?
Hey everyone,
Flying out to NY to try to network with alumni at various banks in about a month. What tends to work better for coffee visits, the week or the weekend?
Choosing between staying Fri - Wed night or Sun - Thurs night.
Thanks for the help.
Bump.
Please help me; I'm trying to book the best flights for my circumstances
If you really fly out to NY, i'd be careful sharing your story as to why you came to NY.
Similar to a prostitute, they won't care about you much if they know you are meeting with 15 different parties.
Sounds good, so mostly tell them "I flew out here to specifically see your firm and talk to everyone"?
Anyone? I'd greatly appreciate the help; I'm flying over from the west (a flight of somewhere between 4-5 hours) and they're expensive, so I'm hoping to get a good feel for everything.
I'd reach out to the bankers it's too early right now.
I always scheduled for coffee chats during the week. Weekends are pretty valuable for full-time people and they probably just wanna relax and not have to do networking coffees. With that being said, I think it depends on the person but I had success with during the week.
Also an undergrad so take this with a grain of salt, but my intuition is that during the week is better.
100% during the week. You should be scheduling these chats ahead of time and making sure your targeted alumni are available, so you don't end up wasting your time and money.
100% weekdays
definitely during the week, they'll be able to get coffee for 30 mins in between meetings or something
Sunday through Thursday should be fine. Mid-afternoon when most normal people usually go out if they are having more than 2 cups a day. An extra couple minutes is refreshing to talk to someone.
If I were you I'd reach out to them now. I'm obviously not an expert lol but I just know I wouldn't want to waste the money, and figure they'll apprecaite you going the extra mile.
Mon-Thur is best. I used to fly up on Sunday and leave Thursday nights. Using the public library in Midtown as a headquarter for networking/working on technicals.
I would argue that you should think twice about flying out if you're ONLY doing it for coffee chats. Sure, they can be valuable. But in essence, a coffee chat is a conversation to have with someone and ask the right questions. I've had a couple of coffee chats with candidates and a couple of simple 15-30 minute calls. For me personally, the method of communication made no difference. In the end, I want to speak to a promising candidate who can be seen as likable by the end of the chat.
Monday - Thursday. Early-to-mid afternoon. Don’t email bankers after 8p on weekdays or at all on weekends.
honestly I think 11pm is fine, Ive gotten more hits from 8 to 11 pm than stuff in the morning
Friday's
Definitely do weekdays. No professional wants to take time out of their weekend to do a coffee chat.
Usually Friday's work the best, since they tend to be the most laidback, as people are just trying to get to the weekend.
Thank you all! I SB'd all of you because this was pretty urgent. I appreciate your replies!
Lmao bruh. Just ask them and say you're open to being flexible around their schedule.
I've been thinking about that too, but I've heard that it's a little too early right this moment to reach out (it would be weird to reach out a month in advance apparently). So I want to buy tickets now when they're 1/2 the price instead of pick the days a week out and pay like $1k just to fly
