Best Finance jobs that aren’t investment banking?
Obviously you get paid nice in IB, but living in NYC or San Fran is expensive so I’m reality, it really isn’t that much. Are there any other jobs in finance or business that are not in the city that pay well just like IB? Or should I stick it out for two years in IB for the experience and then try to venture off to find a more realistic career?
Try out IR - chill job with decent pay
What is IR? Or ER?
IR is investor relations. In this role, you are the 1st point of contact with LPs, and you answer all their questions. You are expected to be knowledgeable with the fund's investments, and you also play a role in fundraising. In huge funds like MF PE, it is well respected. WSO bros like to suck off the deal team, but without IR, there'd be no funds for the deal team to invest. David Rubenstein was IR - to illustrate
ER is equity research. It is NOT a chill job lol. Although certainly better than banking by miles, in terms of hours
I have a friend who does Field Consulting/Corporate Strategy for a Mining company. He basically travels the world and consults on if mines can be supported by local communities and other environmental factors.
A couple other friends worked on Corp Dev teams at Large Teleco companies. They have worked on a bunch of cool projects around network deployment.
I think most companies larger companies will have some sort of strategy role(s) that are really cool.
