Best jacket/coat for winter (UK)?

Starting a new role in M&A soon and had to buy a whole new wardrobe. One thing that is missing is a jacket/coat for the winter. Any recommendations on what the best type of jacket/brands to look for? E.g. puffer, trench, overcoat etc

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some recommendations for winter jackets/coats suitable for a new role in M&A:

Types of Jackets/Coats:

  1. Overcoat: A classic choice for business formal attire. It pairs well with suits and provides a polished look.
  2. Trench Coat: Versatile and stylish, suitable for both formal and semi-formal settings.
  3. Field Coat: Brands like Barbour are popular for their durability and style, especially in colder climates.

Recommended Brands:

  • Barbour: Known for their high-quality field coats, which are both stylish and functional.
  • Orvis: Another excellent choice for field coats, offering durability and warmth.
  • Brooks Brothers: Offers a range of overcoats and trench coats that are well-suited for business formal attire.

Additional Tips:

  • Fit: Ensure the coat fits well over your suit jacket without being too tight.
  • Material: Wool and cashmere blends are excellent for warmth and comfort.
  • Color: Stick to neutral colors like black, navy, or grey for versatility.

A barbour wax jacket with a navy suit and shiny oxfords will make you look the dog's bollocks. M&S do good quality and well priced wool overcoats. Hackett and Uniqlo good for gilets. Charles Tyrwhitt and H&C also will have plenty of coats from rain coats, gilets, trench coats and woolen ones. John Lewis also good quality, still not sold completely on Reiss

Most Helpful

Wool coats

  • M&S, Tommy Hilfiger (try the outlets), Reiss, Hugo Boss
  • Also very easy to find second hand, either in charity shops or on eBay, Vinted etc.
  • Make sure it still fits right with a suit underneath
  • It should be at least 50% wool, if not 100%.

Puffer coats

  • Uniqlo are great for layering pieces (especially the ultralight down gillets and coats which can be worn on their own or underneath a trench)
  • I would be avoid wearing a puffer coat with a suit, or wearing a Barbour in the city at all  -- there's nothing wrong with either, but there are some people who view doing so as gauche

Trench coats

  • Hugo Boss, Mackintosh, Burberry, London Fog
  • This should be lowest priority -- they're only suitable for a limited period of time weather-wise and can be harder to style
