Best resource to learn about the energy industry
Can anyone recommend a good primer (book or web resource) on the energy industry? I'm most interested in oil & gas, but I'd like to learn more about alternative energy, etc.

CSFB put out a great oil and gas primer dated May 14, 2002. If you know anyone over there who could get their hands in it for you that would be a great place to start.
If you are interested in the drilling side, http://www.amazon.com/Primer-Oilwell-Drilling-Basic-Text/dp/0886981948 is a good book. I bet you can find it cheaper somewhere else, just pulled that up in a quick search. I have the 6th edition dated 2001. Not sure which one that is.
http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/analysis_publications/oil_… is pretty good if you don't mind reading online.
http://www.mosburgoil-gas.com/html/primers.html Haven't read this but came up on a search. Looks like it could be worth checking out.
Cool. Are you in an energy group? How much does industry knowledge matter as compared with standard financial knowledge?
Yes. I would say not much at all for an analyst role. Can't remember ever getting an energy specific question in an interview. As long as you can answer why you are interested in the energy industry you should be good to go on that front.
I would learn about the three different streams (up, mid, down) and understand what each entails. Also read up on what a "MLP" is/it's advantages. Be able to speak intelligently about why prices have gone up and the factors affecting prices.
Otherwise, you should be fine. Nobody expects you to know everything.

I am also interested in some solid website/books/other resources on alternative energy. There is so much garbage on the web that it is tough to get through all the crap to the good information. If anyone has any more resources on alternative energy, I would also greatly appreciate the help.
"Oil" by Upton Sinclair. This is a recommendation from an ex-Enron trader(who now trades at one of the dominant oil&gas trading firms).
Excelster: That "oil market basics" site is pretty good. Thanks for the tip. Warhawk: A classic novel, huh? Looks like summer/airplane reading. I'll check it out. Thanks.

I hope these sites help. I initiated a discussion about renewable energy during a recent interview with three very scary traders. At first they challenged my views, but then I pitched a couple of stocks to them, one of which they had on their books, and they were suitably impressed. Go Green!
