Best is Industrials. TMT is not bad either. Rest is a notch below
Thanks - wb Leveraged finance?
It’s a strong team but your options will be limited to credit due to the nature of the product
Industrials
As commented Previously in another thread, I lateralled from DB a few months ago so I'll provide some colour:
First of all absolutely avoid: Healthcare, Consumer (read on)
I would 100% aim for either TMT, FIG, Industrials, LevFIN or REGL (if you are interested in real estate). Overall, these are the best groups for deal experience, best buyside exits (in LTM and historically) and overall culture.
Despite this, bear in mind that Industrials is quite tough, but the team and MDs are machines and you will learn a sh*t load and have plenty experience even after a year. Despite me not being in this group and the culture being tough, I know for a fact mostly all the high-flyers who want to exit end up here and get plenty of interviews at MF's. Also, industrials is generalist so you don't get pigeonholed in for exits to traditional Buy-out PE, so its a win-win.
If you want limited deal experience, a brutal or unorganised top-heavy culture, and a lack of exit or lateral opportunities (trust me due to the unorganised culture within these groups you will get close to no deal experience and an overall bad-culture), pick healthcare or consumer.
If you prioritise return offers, pick ECM, Numis Groups, TMT, FIG, Regl or industrials (if you can cope). All but industrials have really great cultures with more of an old-school boutique banking vibe in the Numis Groups. Really chill Numis As1 +2, you will enjoy your time there. However, exposure to the buy side for Numis Groups and ECM are slightly limited. That said, if you’re looking to lateral, the DB solidified BB brand name amongst recruiters will carry.
Hi, do you have any color on their financing teams? I heard that the asset backed finance and distressed teams are quite strong
Agree with all of the above except that FIG is weak. You forgot to mention that Infra is a great team but can pigeonhole
That’s not true, FIG team is growing at DB London office. Team is small but quite strong. Basically everyone last year who interned got return offers as their trying to grow the team out. Basically all FIG related buyside exits are open to you and that’s what HH’s approach you with most. Exits last year included APO and a few other big names. If your good enough, you get enough deals to move on to a MF.
The Infra team is okay but however it’s going through a transition right now with Tom Moxhan and Luba kotzeva, and it’s mostly top heavy with lot of pitching that isn’t paying off, so experience and learning opportunities in the team is going to be minimal and has been minimal in LTM. If I were a SA they’re looking for guaranteed buy side, stick with Industrials, TMT, FIG, REGL, Levfin. As the lateral hire said definitely avoid consumer and HC.
Is there a possibility to change group after SA if getting the FT offer? If so how is the process?
