Best Way to Approach Networking?

So I'm a rising senior interning at a middle market PE firm in NYC this summer. I had interviews with some solid banks for SA positions, but ultimately they didn't work out. I took my current internship knowing that it wouldn't likely result in a full time offer, and I'd like to bounce into IB, either in NYC or Charlotte.

I'm looking at mostly middle market banks. We're not a target for most places in NYC, but I go to a top-25 school and we have 3-5 alumni at most of the major MM banks. I recently got a list of our alumni in the city, and I want to begin contacting some soon. The problem is I don't really know how to word the emails because it's not like I'm looking for an SA position and can just say "I just want to learn more about banking." I don't want to come right out and say that I won't be getting a return offer.

What do you guys think is the best way to approach this?
