Bossy Associate

Hi Chimps,

Long story short, I am an IB VP for a large international bank in South America (hint: not Brazil), and in my group, there's an associate that has superb technical skills and a lot of history in the bank; nonetheless, he is super bossy (even with the MD), and also offers his opinion on everything.

Although this is an "Ego" issue, he undermines my career. Therefore, I want to handle this matter politely and wisely; any advice would be beneficial.

Thanks,

Lazy way is to put them in their place, which isn't great. They'll double down and you come off as an asshole.

The one that's worked for me is to just let them trip over themselves. Anyone with technical chops thinks they're god's gift and will run their mouth. Only a matter of time before they say stupid shit to the wrong people. Had one step in it "spitting fax" to a group head and it did not end well.

Lol, +1.

Deleted my comment. More of an anger fantasy than something that anyone would say in real life haha.

When the MD is not looking, throw a stapler at his forehead

Huge hint there, but as their superior can't you knock them down a peg?

I have to be honest, it almost sounds like what you're saying is that the Associate under you is more thorough and engaged than you and it is making you look bad.
