Breaking into Non-Quant IB with Mathematics Bachelor's
TLDR; is it possible to break into non quant finance with a mathematics degree
I love math and while I've been in school as a finance major (currently a freshman), I'm going to change my major to some form of computational mathematics or applied analysis. Thing is I do still like finance and I still want to work in high finance after college, but I don't want employers to see my degree and just foam at the mouth thinking that I'm gonna become a quant. I do NOT want to become a quant under any circumstances.
The reason for this is just because I don't find finance to be an exasperatingly difficult subject (i.e. I think you can learn it your own time [especially the type necessary for just vanilla IB] and you don't need to use up university resources that could be more appropriately used on something like engineering or chemistry which are subjects which would require a lot of academic help). I would rather spend my time at college studying something that really gives me joy and intellectual stimulation, and something that needs the resources that college provides you with; need to get my money's worth lol.
Also don't come at me for that take because many many many top bankers have admitted that if you taught a monkey some basic excel functions along with some of the fundamentals of finance they could do the job. I am not trying to shit on people or IB or be pretentious. I just am slightly autistic and like math.
Anyways, any insight?
Definitely possible, know a couple math majors at my nontarget that broke into IB.
