Business GPA
Hey WSO, I've got a question about how to list my grades and any advice would be appreciated. I know various GPA situations have been covered ad nauseum but I didn't see anything matching my specific situation.
I under performed my freshman year and as such will be coming into recruiting with a 3.0, my major is econ and my GPA in that is a little above 3.0, however, I have taken a couple business classes and gotten A's in all those classes.
So my question is: how would it look saying GPA (Business/Cumulative): 4.0/3.0? Is that something I should post?
Thanks in advance.
If business is not your major you are going to look stupid. Do you really think it would be ok if some political science major with a 2.0 took one finance class, got an A, and then listed their GPA as a Finance 4.0? Trying to be deceptive about something that is so easy to check is a great way to get bounced.
on the other hand, if you had a business minor, i think you would be fine listing that, along with your cum. gpa.
Recruiters aren't morons, in case you were wondering.
If a business minor is possible, definitely use that. If not, then I would still advise you to go head and do it. A 3.0, though a good gpa to most people, will be a black mark in our case. I would list it as: Business GPA: 4.0/4.0 Cumulative GPA: 3.0/4.0
Important: Are all the courses used for the business gpa under the same handle? (e.g. "BUS100, BUS122, etc?) or are the different- e.g. MKT, FIN, ACCT, etc?- If different it could pose a problem and you could be going too far in your "creative averaging".
This isn't a universal view of course, but I think there are definitely plenty of people out there who accept it when students do some creative averaging as long as they aren't blatantly untruthful. Honestly that's just the way it works in real life- the way some people massage their figures in this business its hard for them to rain shit on a student who does the same.
This thread reminds me of an absolutely retarded thing one of my friends did sophomore year.
They submitted a resume through ocr for an engineering job and listed their "engineering gpa" as a 4.0. They had taken 3 engineering courses and gotten As in all of them so somehow they felt it was acceptable.
Their resume read something like this: B.S. in Finance and Mathematics Expected graduation 2012 Engineering GPA: 4.0
It ended in a very nasty phone call from career services and several formal apology letters.
Don't be this person. Don't be fucking retarded and list a "business minor" gpa either. Listing your major gpa itself is a joke (generally consists of like 2 classes at the time people apply). Listing ONLY your minor will just get your resume thrown out.
