'Networking' with HR is like trying to get on the football team by hanging out with the water boy's girlfriend. If you have other options, use those.

Get busy living

HR has little say on whether you will be brought into a team - definitely focus on networking directly with analysts, associates, VPs, and - if possible - MDs. HR is only there to help coordinate and take care of the admin for a prospective/new hire. reevaluate your strategy.
