Canadian Banks vs BNP/HSBC/SocGen
Looking to potentially lateral from a smaller mid market shop, curious what the general thoughts and consensus among the Canadian banks compared to European banks like BNP are? Any preference in terms of deal flow/comp/exits, obviously know RBC is much better but how about the rest of the Canadian banks? Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance!
Assume this is in New York or the US, I’d go with the Canadian banks tbh. Haven’t heard many good things about BNP in the US, I’m sure they are fine in Europe but at least from what I’ve seen comp is subpar and not sure if decent exits are even existent? Will likely have a much better experience at any of the Canadians
CIBC/Scotia is probably a decent comp to some of the European banks you mention. The others, not really.
Are CIBC/Scotia really on the same level as BNP or HSBC? Thought they were a lot better, not to the same level as RBC/TD/BMO but still better comp, exits and overall experience
I think that would vary sector by sector. I see CIBC, Scotia, BNP, SocGen in the same kind of dent bookrunner (but typically not lead) roles on various transactions in my sector. HSBC not so much - any Canadian bank incl National is probably going to give you better reps because at least National executes on M&A in Canada.
Fuck hsbc
Canadians for sure
RBC/TD > BNP rest don’t matter
congrats on TD
Tell me you’d rather work at BNP over TD bro
