So tough it out for the summer then, only a few more weeks. As long as you don't do anything to actually piss him off there's no reason he wouldn't give you a good reference.
So what I would do is after he is done explaining the task /assignment, just "quickly" say .. just to reiterate and confirm, you would like me to do x,y, and z, correct?
this way if and when he comes at you with questions or comments you can tell him this is how I was told to do it...
