Centerview Associate Lateral

Can anybody provide insight into what the Centerview lateral associate interview process is like? Are there modeling tests and all the typical hoops to jump through or is it more focused?

In all seriousness,

1/ They are huge on references - if you know someone already there, that’s the best way to get an interview

2/ I am not sure they use any of the usual suspect HHs

1) They only hire laterals opportunistically - there is never a real need for additional headcount and as a result, the threshold for being hired as a lateral is much higher

2) Very lengthy and intense interview process... 9+ interviews over 2-3 months

3) Lean on referrals or one or two specific HH firms. Essentially will not get an interview without getting through a recruiter recruiting for a specific role or through a strong referral

4) Multiple rounds of technical interviews with acc/dil math in your head, LBO math in your head, brain teasers, etc

Overall, it is a long and tough process. Because they only hire opportunistically, they have no real need to fill seats and can cut your process off at any point in time if they determine they don't need to hire another person

Depends on what level, also ignore title

Biotech? Nah

Legacy consumer? Nah

Rx? If things pick up, could see a sr As / early P hired for sure. Probably the most likely

Industrials? Maybe looking for a P1 and As1 in 1-2 years if the group continues to exceed its budget

FIG? Half the mid levels are laterals - could see a hire in the more As range but i don’t have great visibility here

High growth consumer? Will likely hire an As1-3 within a year if the VC partner keeps sourcing middle market sellsides

RE? Not really a focus of the firm due to lack of senior interest

Healthcare services? Depends on A2A retention over the next 2 years. They kept 1 rockstar analyst, tbd on the 3rd year one. Hard to see any hires here for awhile since the industry isn’t very specialized

Too lazy to type out the rest

I’ve mainly worked in biotech, legacy consumer, and a random business services client here and there so those are my closest understandings. Overall, the best chance to lateral over is to work with the HH and to either work in an industry of need or get in fresh with the As1s (more unlikely since the firm hires way too many dogshit diversity MBAs now).
