Chances at BB?
I recently transferred to UVA where I am majoring in Economics.
At my previous school (community college), I pulled a 3.76 completing 63 credits in one year. However, after transferring, for various personal reasons i did not do as well. I ended up with a 2.89 this past spring semester. However, I'm doing really well this summer term (3.8+ 10 credits) so I expect my cumulative UVA gpa to be around 3.34 in time for fall on grounds interviewing.
I'm a bit of a nontraditional student (26 years old). I spent 4 years in Korea initially teaching SATs (50-60 hours a week) but later branching into management roles (60-70 hours a week).
What are my chances at BB firms?
Do you know anyone in banking? This will probably be your best shot. Otherwise be able to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the capital markets, this may help but knowing someone especially high up is better
You may want to get others opinion on the matter but i dont think you should put that you went to a CC on your resume. I screen resumes at my bank and personally don't let people that went to a CC get interviews. However if you didn't put it on there how would i know? and once you get the job you get the job, at that point who cares that you went to a CC. Whether it is true or not people look down on people that went to a CC, but because 9 times out of 10 the person was a dumb ass and its not that hard to transfer to a top notch state school. I'm not saying this is you, because many smart people do go the CC route. Nevertheless people will still assume the worst about a resume with a CC on it. My advice would be to not put it on your resume or even bring it up.
What do other people think about his matter, I'd be interest to know if this is the norm, or if other banks dont mind that someone went to a CC.
I agree here...just don't bring it up. If they dig down into your education, just reference your time at your new school. good luck.
I'm not sure what the rationale would be for looking down on the CC, though. He was admitted to the state school and will graduate from it, so it's not as if he's of any lower caliber. Typically, transfer admissions are often harder than regualar admissions, too.
UVA is one of those schools that has a very extensive database of alumni willing to talk to students about their professions. I know I get an email from a different student almost every month, and we'll generally set up a time to speak on the phone. This is a great opportunity to ask questions about the business in general and the specific roles that different people play. If you impress someone during a conversation like that, you have your way in the door and the whole resume screening question is irrelevant. Remember, people put themselves in that database because they want to help. Use them.
