Citi Bonus Structure/Information

Hi, I'm an incoming analyst in nyc ib coverage at citi. How do first year analyst bonuses work. Is there a quota for amount of top vs bottom. Who determines it? Is it your group head, mds, your staffer? Does HR set the bonus ammount? Does it vary group to group or all IB coverage and product groups have the same bands. Any and all information would be helpful. Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about Citi's bonus structure for first-year analysts:

  1. Bonus Determination:

    • Bonuses for first-year analysts are typically influenced by performance evaluations. These evaluations are often conducted by your group head, MDs, and staffers. They assess your contributions, teamwork, and overall performance.
    • There is usually a "bucket" system (e.g., top, middle, bottom) that determines the bonus range you fall into. The distribution of analysts into these buckets can vary, but there is often a quota or guideline for how many analysts can be in each bucket.
  2. Role of HR:

    • HR does not directly set individual bonuses but works with senior management to establish the overall bonus pool and compensation bands for the year. The final allocation within those bands is determined by your group leadership.
  3. Consistency Across Groups:

    • While there is a general framework for bonuses across IB coverage and product groups, the specific bonus amounts can vary slightly depending on the group's performance and revenue contribution. Some groups may have higher bonus pools if they had an exceptional year.
  4. Bonus Bands:

    • Citi's bonus bands for first-year analysts are generally aligned with industry standards. For example, top performers might receive bonuses in the range of $90k, while middle performers could see bonuses closer to $60k. Bottom bucket bonuses are typically lower but still competitive.
  5. Stub Bonus:

    • If you start mid-year, you may receive a "stub bonus," which is a pro-rated bonus for the months worked before the full bonus cycle.

If you're aiming for a top bucket bonus, focus on delivering high-quality work, being proactive, and building strong relationships with your team and leadership. Good luck at Citi!

At the first yr analyst level, historically no difference group to group. Citi’s bonus structure pays well for top performers and below street for average performers. If you get a 3/3 (mid bucket, probably what >75% of people get) you can expect 45k. But top bucket first year can see 75-85k. Group heads have some ability to move money here or there (ie they think you were at the top end of mid bucket, maybe you’ll get marginally more $)

Ah ok that is rough. Didn't realize that most people's first year bonus is that low.
