Confusing interview results.

Have you ever had that perfect interview, where everything went well, you aced the technicals, made the interviewer laugh, and the 30 minutes seemed like a second? I had such an interview with a boutique bank but I just got an email saying I didn't get past first round. I am really confused because there have definitely been interviews where I fucked up (either fucked up the technicals, or interviewers seemed bored etc..) yet got called to the next round...

Just wondering what your experiences are...

I had an interview last year in which the analyst said that he was impressed and would definitely be in touch and got a call a week later from HR saying sorry. Good thing though - the bank no longer exists.

Don't sweat it...could be any number of reasons out of your control

I am not the greatest interviewer for whatever reason, so I've definitely had it go the way of messing things up, coming off as nervous, boring, etc but getting called to the second round anyway (sometimes they already have their mind made up from your resume in this sense) but I've never had it go like that. Sorry to hear, but yeah, they might have had someone just accept an offer to take your place, decided they weren't really hiring, etc. Fuck it - their loss.

From my experience, sometimes they find one fault in the beginning. After that, they go on "take-it-easy" mode and try to make you like them even though they are not considering. you. That way you might still think highly of them/consider reapplying in the future.

It might not be it, but it has happened to me before.

With the way some of these banks are recruiting, you could ace the interview ten times over and still not make it to seconds. One boutique that I interviewed with earlier this week gave second rounds to 4 out of the 28 interviewees. Needless to say, its a bloodbath out there.
