Corporate Banking to Investment Banking
Hey guys,
I'm currently interning in the Corporate Banking division of a European BB in London. It's going well so far (still early days) but a number of my colleagues have said that I should apply for the Investment Banking division of the bank for analyst roles once I've completed my degree next year.
This is all well and good but I fear 1) my University isn't prestigious enough (I study Maths at a top 10 UK uni) and 2) with no IBD internship I'd struggle to compete with those applying for the graduate roles.
In all honesty, I don't think I'd get a place on the graduate scheme (1st-year analyst) without an IB internship and comparatively average bachelors degree. The thing is I'm already massively overachieving to get the CB internship, so why not see how far I can get eh? I'm pretty set on applying for IBs and really my question is do I apply for internships or as a 1st-year analyst?
I will also apply for the Big 4 having turned down an internship there this summer but I'm unsure as to which area would be best? Transaction advice seems the most logical choice to get to IB.

Plausibility of transitioning from corporate banking to IB within a BB bank? (Originally Posted: 06/27/2018)
I went to a non-target school and didn't have a great understanding of investment banking until my junior year, but I've come a long way since then. I'm about to start in the corporate banking department (where I interned last summer) at a lower-tier BB bank. A little background info: my group works very closely with the firm's IB. For instance, most of my work is on syndicated credit facilities (revolvers and term loans) and often has the IB department's letterhead on the final report (I think because the bank likes to use the lending relationship to push IB services). Talking to the directors of my group, both come from an IB background and apparently my department actually used to be housed within the IB subsidiary of the firm. I graduated from a large, upper-mid tier university with a finance degree magna cum laude and a 3.9 GPA; not sure if that helps my chances. Has anyone been in a similar situation before and made the transition? I have a few ideas about how I can start putting things in motion but if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
