Decisions

I'm not going to post a lot of details for personal reasons and because I'm sure you guys don't want to read a ton of stuff. Here's the deal: Would you accept an analyst position in public finance @ a smaller firm with exit opportunities you're not even sure of or would you just work on a one year masters degree @ a very highly regarded institution and do an IB internship and try again in 09?
Note: I did NOT have an IB internship during undergrad. I had an internship in another field, but for the most part, I was working full-time to finance my educaction. Thanks guys.

The masters degree in finance may or may not help you out. Many firms do not hire Masters candidates into summer programs, or if they do, the recruiting is done separately. For example, masters candidates who apply to DB are not elligible to summer analyst or full-time analyst programs through on-campus recruiting. They must go through separate channels.

The analyst position would allow you to get a CFA (if you like), take the GMAT, figure out some other path that is more likely to be lucrative. Plus you'll be working and building your resume, instead of paying money to build it up.

So, unless you know for certain that you would be able to get relevant experience while doing that masters program that will get you into IB, I wouldn't do it.
