Difference Between Front Office and Back Office?

High Schooler here! Any help is appreciated greatly

I've heard several people use "back office" and "front office" a lot on this thread. What are some job titles for "back office" and "front office?"

He might be wrong but my dad who works for BB&T told me that back office usually refers to Information Technology (my dad), R & D, and lastly, quantitative analysts. I'm under the impression that front office refers to investment banking analysts, corporate banking analysts, etc.

How does the compensation differ? I've read somewhere that quantitative analysts on Wall Street can earn more than a BB IB Analyst and go onto earn more than BB IB MD's. Can someone speak to the differences in compensation?

Thanks a lot everyone! Hoping to break into IB one day
