Dilemma - Next steps post BB?
Hi All -
Background - Second year analyst @ a top-tier BB in Hong Kong. Originally interned at NY BB IBD in a top group (received FT offer) but decided to transfer to Hong Kong to try something new. I am American and thinking about next steps here.
Deal flow has been weak globally, which also has been true in the APAC region. Consequence of this has been a somewhat stymied learning experienced - would like to salvage what (if any) is left of my analyst stint by considering next steps. For those of you with some industry experience, what would you guys do?
Third year --> MBA. This is the most straight-forward option. A-to-A promotions, although not guarateed per se, tend to be more a lot more common. Can stick it out for the next 1.5 years and go back home for the MBA and continue career in the US at that point.
Transfer asap (internally). There are certain opportunities available within the firm that would potentially facilitate a move. The issue is these groups aren't necessarily what would be considered "front-office" roles - think capital markets, IB risk, corporate advisory groups. Are opportunities existent out of these groups or is it going to be MBA anyway?
Ask for rotation (3rd year). Third-year rotation in NY is a possibility in an IBD coverage group (my group now). However, are there any opportunities for third-year analysts? Transfering 3rd year also may impede MBA plans... (difficult to ask your team to rotate you on a 1-year basis AND ask for MBA reccs at the same time..). Does recruiting happen for third-years?
Buyside - There are actually a lot of buyside opportunities in Asia - the problem is most are fledgling Chinese buyside firms (some with very high caliber people). However, my Chinese is not of a sufficient level to work in a pure Chinese environment, and to be honest not particularly a big fan of the work environment either. Other type of instituational investors (SWFs, insurance, mutual funds, AM) all are increasingly localized - squeezing the range of opportunities (and closing fast).
Well - that's it in a nutshell. Any suggestions - particularly from 2nd - 3rd years in NY. How are your experiences thus far in terms of deal flow, and opportunities to next steps (whether that be PE, HF, corporates, non-profit, or other kinds of institutions)
Thanks!
