Does talking to HR help?

So I'm interested in this boutique bank, but the only person that works there from my school is an MD in HR. Would it help me get a first-round if I talk to her or should I just focus on people in the department I want to join?

I would focus on the people in the department that you want to join. HR usually ends up being just a pain in the ass and nothing more. You can talk to HR, but prioritize talking to the analysts in the department you want to join.
