Emailing a Relative's Friend Regarding Internship

What's the correct etiquette on contacting someone in this situation?

A friend of a family member is an MD at a company and said that she will definitely be able to help me with getting a summer internship, and for me to just email her about it. I've never met or spoken to this person, so in the email should I mention the internship or simply ask to speak with her in person or over the phone?

I was thinking something along the lines of expressing my interest in the company and their possible internship opportunities, since the person did explicitly state that they would assist me in getting an internship. I don't want to mess this up so what's the best course of action?
