I'd be wary starting a career in energy now. I would look into metals or agriculture if you're interested in commodities.
I doubt there will be layoffs. Yeah oil prices aren't great but with the markets like this there is still activity - asset sales, divestitures, acquisitions, restructuring and recapitalization.
