No consequences. You're aren't obligated to them unless you signed something, which I'm sure you didn't, as there is nothing to sign. You're not obligated to "volunteer" your time to anyone. Be thankful for the opportunity, and work hard if it ends up being your only option, but if something better presents itself, do not hesitate.

 

Thanks for the response. Could you shed any light on how to reneged firm might react? Would I have to worry about them hurting me, short or long term? Also, could you see the new firm getting angry about me exploring options?

If they are offering an unpaid internship, they cannot possibly have enough clout to do you any harm. Think how ridiculous they would look if they not only cannot afford to pay an intern, but then act like children when said intern reneges because of an emergency. I would not pay them or their opinion any mind.
