Executive remuneration -- how to find comparable firms?

Hi all,
When determining the remuneration package for the CEO based on comparable companies, what are the most importants things the companies should have in common?
For example, culture, company (risk) profile, strategic priorities, financial situation etc.?
And should we or shouldn't we take the scope of the firm (e.g. based on revenue) into account when searching for comparable companies for remuneration?

Thanks in advance!

I think optimally you would look for companies of comparable size in the same industry because CEO comp. is going to vary based on the size and complexity of the organization. If there aren't companies of similar size in the same industry, you will have to look to companies of similar size that have similar risk profiles, strategic priorities, capital intensities, financial siutations, etc., as you note above.

Thanks, but what about cross industry / country analysis?

luckyluke, are you French or Belgian? Just curious, based on your name.

I think that it is going to depend. Can you say what kind of company we are talking about? Cross industry/country analysis might be helpful depending on the type of company. As thought questions, if you were looking for a new CEO, where would you look? And who are this company's competitors?
