Experienced analyst - 1+ years of experience?

Recent graduate who started Ft in an IB group looking to lateral. Nothing wrong with the group in particular, but the location is not ideal (no friends or family nearby)

I looked around for lateral postings and there is a decent amount, namely JPM. It says they're looking for 1 + YOE but from others who lateraled relatively early in their careers, is the 1 year requirement strict? I think I am fairly technically proficient and can learn quickly - been getting good feedback from other people within my group. Would groups be open to those that do not strictly have 1+ years of experience or do I realistically need to stick it out for a year and apply around my 1-year mark?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding lateraling with less than 1 year of experience:

  1. General Best Practice:

    • It is generally recommended to wait at least one year before lateraling. This is a common practice across industries, particularly in finance. Completing a full year demonstrates commitment and stability, which are valued traits in the industry.
  2. Perception of Short Stints:

    • If you leave a job before completing a year, it might raise concerns about your reliability and commitment. Potential employers might view a short stint as a sign of flightiness or poor decision-making.
  3. Exceptions and Flexibility:

    • While the one-year mark is a standard guideline, there are exceptions. If you have compelling reasons and can demonstrate strong technical proficiency and positive feedback from your current group, some firms might be open to considering you earlier.
  4. Lateral Recruiting Timelines:

    • Lateral recruiting generally occurs in Q1/Q2 of each year. Banks prefer not to hire laterally in the back half of the year due to expectations around guaranteed compensation packages.
  5. Experience and Fit:

    • Highlighting your technical skills and positive feedback can help, but firms often look for candidates who have demonstrated their abilities over a longer period. If you can show that you have quickly adapted and excelled in your current role, it might strengthen your case.
  6. Networking and Applications:

    • Networking can play a crucial role. Leveraging your network and getting recommendations from within the industry can sometimes help bypass strict experience requirements.

In summary, while the one-year experience requirement is a common standard, there are instances where firms might be flexible, especially if you can demonstrate strong performance and have a compelling reason for wanting to move. However, waiting until you have completed a year might provide a stronger foundation for your application.
