Finance careers— chill hours, decent pay
I’ve just started an internship in IB, it’s a lot of work and it’s good so far but I know I can’t keep it up for very long. I see myself in IB for a year and the leaving for a corporate related role, working a regular 9-5.
Would would those 9-5 type jobs be? (I have experience in IB and VC now). And would it make more sense to do IB for a year before joining, or joining right after grad? Thanks.
If you want to move to a corporate 9-5 then you have 2-3 options after IB. You can go into FP&A, Corporate Development, or Corporate Strategy. FP&A is budgets, cap ex planning, and reporting. Corporate Development is M&A for the company (and sometimes strategy work) and inorganic growth. Corporate Strategy (sometimes separate from Corp Dev) is the high-level thinking about the future of the company i.e. pivoting the company's direction, new market expansion and how to do it, and new products to expand into.
Some of the larger corporations will also have a CVC team (Corporate Venture Capital) where it's a VC team that invests in startups that align with their parent industry (i.e. an oil and gas company investing in clean energy tech or new exploration or drilling tech). The are not a ton of CVC teams, but if you're passionate about VC then it's something to look into.
There are no chill options without a massive paycut. You’ve chosen a dying field. Good luck.
