Firm wants me to switch from Real estate IB to equity research coverage

I work at a mid-market investment bank and put in a tremendous amount of effort to get here. Long term, my goal is to move to the buyside. I was completely blindsided when they suggested I'd be a good fit for equity research. This isn't a performance issue—the other members of my team (just one VP and one MD) were surprised as well and want me to stay. However, there's a hiring freeze, and the firm’s new REIT equity research group needs support.

I spoke with my boss afterward and made it clear that I don't want to leave banking. He assured me I wouldn’t be fired if I declined the move, but emphasized that they want me to be a team player. Frankly, this doesn’t make sense to me. I’m supposed to get an update on Sunday. What does everyone think?
