Fit question: Top performer hated by everyone or average performer loved by everyone?

Would you rather be a top performer and be hated by everyone or be an average performer and be loved by everyone?

Came across a tough investment banking interview question and I wanted to get opinions on how to best respond.

dunno what right answer is but being a top bucket analyst with a shit attitude got me a lot further in life than being a mediocre analyst with a great attitude.

Top performer hated by all is oxymoronic
