Flagship Sector Team vs Generalist M&A?
Starting an internship at a bank soon and have the option to choose between a few teams.
I’m mainly considering two:
• Renewables sector coverage: The bank’s flagship team doing the biggest deals, with a strong reputation in the region. However, I’ve heard interns mostly only work on pitches rather than actual live deals.
• Generalist M&A: Executing live transactions and maybe even modelling, while also getting to work across different industries.
I’m leaning towards generalist M&A since I feel like I’d learn more from working on actual deals. On the other hand, the sector team is one of the strongest at the bank, so I’m not sure if I’d be missing out on a better opportunity.
My goal is to eventually recruit for BB/EB IB roles, so I’m also thinking about which experience would be more valuable on my CV.
Anyone been in a similar position? Would you prioritise live deal experience over being in a bank’s strongest team?
Thanks!
