FT offer received for AM team I am not interested in - advice needed
Hi everyone,
I am very lucky to have received a FT AM offer at JPM/MS/GS in NY/London, with good comp (base 20% lower than IBD, working 60h/week, with a "low" bonus).
However, from interning with this team, I know that I am not interested in the work that the team does, although I got along with them well, and I feel like it is one of the teams within AM that has the worst exit opportunities due to less transferable skills.
As such, having no other offer at the moment, I am also applying to other Analyst positions, currently avoiding summer internships because I think it would be a step back from a FT offer, mainly in LevFin and CB, but also applying to some other AM roles that I am interested in.
Thus, I wanted to ask you all for advice on what you would do in my position? Would you accept the offer and move internally after some time (to either IBD or an in-house investment team), which is possible but difficult (as per people that I met who did this) or accept another offer (if any) for a team I am more interested in, taking into account that my end goal would be to get into Private Credit?
I am afraid of being stuck in this role because of not having the opportunity to move internally or having to wait a long time for this, which would reduce the opportunities to move to another role, thus "wasting" time + I would need to dedicate a lot of my free time to level up my modelling to even be considered to lateral to IBD or Private Credit.
For some background, I have good relevant internships and the GPA needed (not the best) for banking.
Thanks in advance!
Would really have to know what division this was to offer advice.
Edit - looks like I accidentally replied to the above poster - not intentional, sorry
Guessing you're in more of a support/client service AM role rather than traditional AM (investing role) based on your post.
If true - I would say internal exit to IB is very unlikely. You're not eligible for summer internships so you're right to avoid them. I would ask if there's any possibility to switch now - think something like CB or IB. Even credit risk is a better seat than an AM support job. Otherwise I'd just keep recruiting until the offer expires, I think you're focused on the right sectors but FT is very limited this year so will be difficult. Levfin is highly sought after so unless you have a strong network from previous recruiting I would focus your energy on CB.
Accept and keep recruiting
What is it about the role you don’t like? Are any of your previous internships hiring? Did you get a full taste of what they do? Did they let you do anything unsupervised? I’ve heard of internships where people just were paid and basically interviewed a bunch of people in the company on their role. Barely did any real work. It is absent from reality.
