Ft recruiting

Just got off a call with a global head at a MM. I told him I was interested in his current group, but honestly, I probably didn’t sound as enthusiastic as I could have — partly because I’m more interested in the group he was in for years prior. That’s what really drew me to reach out in the first place.

He told me to keep in touch and reach out again in September, and also recommended I get involved with a relevant club at my school.

Now I’m second-guessing myself. Should I have just said I’m interested in investment banking overall and kept it broad? Or was it good that I showed some focus and honesty, even if it wasn’t 100% aligned with his current seat?

Any thoughts on how much I messed this up — if at all — and how to salvage this would be appreciated.
