Gaming in Interviews

What do you guys think about mentioning gaming in interviews? I usually don’t mention it because there’s still a sigma around it, especially with more senior people. I wouldn’t call it a big part of my personality but it’s definitely one of my hobbies.

I’ve mentioned it before briefly in a first round interview. It was with a younger guy who seemed like maybe he would game. Turns out he did, but I didn’t feel like it was a crazy strong plus that I had mentioned it. Kinda more like when you and someone else both like watching the NFL. Could have been my fault for not mentioning a specific game that we could have bonded over, but I also didn’t really want him to know that I still like playing Fortnite, despite not being a 12 year old

Was asked about a recent deal talked about activision and Microsoft. Asked if I played said yeah and then proceeded to grill me about the video game space for 10 mins.

Just something I did in an interview and it worked.

I mentioned gaming in my interviews multiple times for my role now. But I mentioned it to shape how I can deal with stress, quick thinking and dedication to being good at something. I played professionally for a few years, traveled to tournaments around the country and tons online. It actually did me good I think due to the fact that I shaped it into showing how it benefits me and the team. If you can do that, mention it.

You would be surprised.

During interviews, I used to drop building gaming PC’s as one of my hobbies. In one of my superdays, that naturally led to a discussion about gaming and ultimately a good word from the second year analyst that I ended up working with.

You can always mention it if they ask. If your hobby is the reason you get dinged, you don’t want to work there anyways.
