Gaming in Interviews
What do you guys think about mentioning gaming in interviews? I usually don’t mention it because there’s still a sigma around it, especially with more senior people. I wouldn’t call it a big part of my personality but it’s definitely one of my hobbies.
Extremely curious about this as well.
I’ve never had the guts to try it out. However I am convinced that if a fellow gamer is interviewing you the job would 100% be yours
I’ve mentioned it before briefly in a first round interview. It was with a younger guy who seemed like maybe he would game. Turns out he did, but I didn’t feel like it was a crazy strong plus that I had mentioned it. Kinda more like when you and someone else both like watching the NFL. Could have been my fault for not mentioning a specific game that we could have bonded over, but I also didn’t really want him to know that I still like playing Fortnite, despite not being a 12 year old
Lol
Don’t be afraid!
During my superday with Credit Suisse. Literally talked with an M&A VP for 15 minutes about the type of video games we played lol.
Was asked about a recent deal talked about activision and Microsoft. Asked if I played said yeah and then proceeded to grill me about the video game space for 10 mins.
Just something I did in an interview and it worked.
Or you can save yourself the trouble and say some team sports and highlight you are a team player. If you lift weights you can talk about growth mindset and being disciplined lol
I mentioned gaming in my interviews multiple times for my role now. But I mentioned it to shape how I can deal with stress, quick thinking and dedication to being good at something. I played professionally for a few years, traveled to tournaments around the country and tons online. It actually did me good I think due to the fact that I shaped it into showing how it benefits me and the team. If you can do that, mention it.
I played professionally so it almost always comes up. I focus on game theory, problem solving, etc. and the preparation that went into it. Talk about the travel and things I did to be prepared to compete. I show them that even in my other lives I was extremely attentive to detail. Comes across as a good strength for me.
Don’t say you’re a gamer say you’re passionate about the industry. Gaming is hot for M&A in most tech/media groups so being very knowledgeable of the big players, recent deals (cough MSFT/ATVI, TTWO/ZNGA, EMBRAC-B/SQNNY) can be a huge swing in your favor during an interview
You would be surprised.
During interviews, I used to drop building gaming PC’s as one of my hobbies. In one of my superdays, that naturally led to a discussion about gaming and ultimately a good word from the second year analyst that I ended up working with.
You can always mention it if they ask. If your hobby is the reason you get dinged, you don’t want to work there anyways.
Depends on the game tbh. If you drop Modern Warfare 2 that's an instant offer but if you tell me about Fortnite you're dead
Facts. Would also push you through the interview process immediately
Don’t bring it up unless you’re at least 1K LP challenger.
1v1 for the offer
