The only way I can see this going okay is if you are very subtle. It depends on your relationship with your boss but a casual "have you noticed x is acting such and such lately?" You kind of have to sneak around it and make your boss think he is figuring this out on his own. Otherwise it could be pretty nasty if he doesn't buy it or it turns out it isn't entirely true. Chances are his work (or lack of it) has probably already been noticed and you may get somewhere like that. I would NOT approach it like you know 100% that the guy is looking around and you are looking to throw him under the bus.
OP, you ever see Inception? You have to plant the idea without saying anything directly on your own, so your MD will think the suspicion was his idea. Nobody likes a tattle tale unless it is directly costing your group money or business.
Exactly. Leave some evidence on the MD's printer if you want, like a job application with the Associate's info filled out or equivalent. Personally, I think it's a waste of time. Even if the MD confronts him, all the Associate has to say is 'so and so contacted me for a discussion'. Big deal.
It sounds like this associate is dominating you at the game of life, my friend. Once he has you sitting at home, using your free time to scheme against him, he has won the battle.

People are dicks granted but unless you see this really raising your profile with the MD why make an enemy......? Leave your own personal ego out of it and make a decision looking at all the factors... The answer is pretty obvious.
People tend to get what they deserve. Fate is often more creative and far more sadistic than you are. Weigh out whether any gain will be worth getting your hands dirty here....he's leaving, you have to stay. If he's not threatening your situation at all, you probably have more important things to focus on.

This would be a severely career-limiting move for you. Don't do it. You will get absolutely no points with your MD. Most likely it would count against you. Politics matter in business. If he is indeed looking for another job he will be gone soon enough. Don't risk your reputation for 15 minutes of satisfaction.

No one likes a tattle tail. If I had analyst do what you're thinking of, I'd be thinking about firing the analyst.
Everyone in banking takes it for granted that everyone they are working with is likely to be looking for exit options. It's part of the game.
As for being thrown under the bus - deal with that independent of your suspicions.

People will assume that you would do the same to them. You would lose all trust among your co-workers. Not worth it.
This thread is the reason we discuss maturity level differences and the reasoning behind bringing in more mature Associates over direct A to A guys. What you don't realize is that you have a long career ahead of you. This is just a moment in time. Why not make friends with him (the associate)? You don't know where he will end up, and I'm sure he knows that you are much more competent with the number crunching than he is. Besides who knows what he can do for you in the game of getting into Bschool (if you ever want to go). Do not EVER snitch on a colleague to the boss (unless the boss is a personal/family friend). It gains you no favors, and makes you look young, insecure, and to have a low emotional IQ. It's easy saying this now, in retrospect, because I sounded like you when I was 22/23. Just think about things you, and their outcomes, over longer periods of time.

If anything he "threw you under the bus for" alarmed your boss then I'm sure he would ask you about it. I'm sure the MD sees a lot more than you would think haha so I wouldn't worry about it much. Obviously if he's doing something illegal that's different. Otherwise, I wouldn't waste your bosses time having him be the arbitrator for you guys who he'll see as children.
