Get in with gfs uncle
So my girlfriend’s uncle is a MD at a BB. I don’t really have the chance to meet him in person, but she said she’ll “talk to him” about helping me get a job. Current senior w/out SA or IBD experience at a low/mid semi-target.
How should I go about speaking with him directly and hoping to get an opportunity? How much weight can he really pull?
Am I the only one sick of these clueless kids who don't have the basic IQ needed to take advantage of high-level relationships that they have been handed on a silver platter? I mean come on, how the fuck do you think you should go about speaking to him?
man it’s a lot more complicated than that. Wondering because I’ve heard (on this fucking forum) that many BBs are very stern on that kind of thing. Also, I don’t know her family THAT well, let alone her uncle at all
So say that its JPM, every BB is different. Also, if she likes you enough then she will put all of her sway onto her uncle for you and he should know the process well enough. IMO, professionalism isn't really needed in these situations as long as you're close with the girl.
EDIT: The way to play these situations on WSO is to change some details, but not the bank. For example, say that you recently found out your parents have a very close friend at the BB just to provide more cover.
dude this is so specific to your individual situation (how close you are with the family, with your gf, how long youve been dating, your age, your shared cultures/values between her family and you/your family)
It is impossible to give specific advice other than be polite and do not expect anything to happen, Have a good story as to why you are interested in banking, and present yourself in a clear and respectful manner. Be extremely courteous of this MD's time as there are so few opportunities to meet someone at such a high level at such a prestigious firm.
If the conversation goes well he will casually or explicitly mention that you should send him your resume- thats the key.

suggest removing the name of the bank...just replace with "at a BB bank"
however, the way this goes is...you ask your GF to arrange to introduce you to her uncle...usually a family dinner. This gives you a chance to show the uncle that you are a decent human being. It doesn't take much. Help cook (maybe if its just prepping a salad...cutting some vegetables for 5 minutes). don't be over bearing...just don't be a complete asshole.
if this is not possible, then have the GF's mom or dad make the request on your behalf (they should know you)
