Getting first round - experience vs GPA?
Guys,
all other being equal, who is most likely to get first round for a summer internship:
a) GPA 3.8, no experience b) GPA 3.5, no-name boutique experience c) GPA 3.0, regional BB/EB experience
Thank you for your insights.
To be honest, if the (A) student is from a target, then probably A. GPA seems to be the most important component for getting a first round from my experience, especially if you are from a target and have networked a little bit.
Yeah I'd probably put it at School > Experience > GPA
For example--
3.8 from target > 3.0 with BB/EB nontarget > 3.5 from non name boutique nontarget
3.5 no-name boutique target > 3.0 regional BB / EB nontarget > 3.8 no experience nontarget
Depends on what the internship is for, to be honest. If you're applying to a Big 4 firm, or places like Northwestern Mutual, everyone gets an interview (and a job, lol). And it also depends on where you go to school. A 3.0 art history major at H/S/P is more desirable than a 4.0 fund manager at a state school investment club. But all else equal, I'd say the first two are tied, b/c the last guy won't make it past the resume screens with a 3.0 GPA.
For a summer internship, A. Low GPA plus prior internship experience and no return offer screams completely inept /w connections.
For full time, C
Anecdotal but I was B) at a semitarget and had way more interviews and offers than my friends who fit A) or C). This is assuming everyone is from comparable schools.
Thanks for your responses guys. Unfortunately, I'm the C) one. Did an IB BB/EB internship, and I seek transition to London. But my gpa sucks.
Thx.
If it's below 3.0, don't put it on your resume and mass apply.
It's 3.01, with top grades in Corporate Finance and Math. Should I mention it on my resume?
