i use it all day everyday
Each office has its own restrictions.
my office blocks it, thats where smart phones come in handy.
But most do block it, at least if the IT department knows anything. Sometimes you can get around it by using Meebo or other web chat services and sometimes proxy servers, but banks have caught onto those as well.
Some of my friends at smaller banks/boutiques can actually use Gmail etc. all day because the IT department is almost non-existent... pretty nice situation to be in. :)
But in general, assume you won't have access.

For me it was at my last job, but they were quite lax.
Do your firms allow it and even if they do, do you feel safe using it?
...why would you do that? If you've ever had an internship or position in a corporate environment, you'd know that your activities are monitored by technology groups within the company. Aside from that, most firms have blockers that disallow downloads of these apps or access to these websites...

just dont do it. use your personal phone if you need to email non-work related items
Most bulge brackets block access to personal email
just get a decent personal smart phone and use that for all im and email needs
Was at an MM as a Summer Analyst and we were allowed to access gmail etc, obviously with discretion.
from what I understand from my friends at other firms, this was a rare luxury on the street.
I interned at a BB last summer, Gmail was blocked, as were all major email sites. Used my iPhone.
