Do non-targets with otherwise-conpetitive CVs, 2–4 IB/PE internships, exceptional awards/achievements and extracurriculars stand a chance (considering there're no assessment tests to prune out any fraction of target applicants, unlike MS/UBS/Deutsche/Bnpp/Barclays)?
GSIBD is quite elitist when it comes to universities and talent. Its dominated by LSE/HEC/Oxbridge and European B-schools. Don't think anything below warwick stands a chance (no matter how many internships). dont think anyone from warwick is even at gs ibd atm. I think if you have a high level referral you might get an interview at the least.
How about other forms of "evidence" on your CV that your intellectual abilities are on the same level as the Oxbridge student, say performance in Olympiads—any consideration for the kinds of candidates whom only financial challenges & other non-academic factors have prevented from getting into target schools?
Don’t listen to teenagers. If you can impress a senior MD or a global head and get a referral, doesn’t matter what your school is. As long as you can interview, you’re in.

If someone says no, are you not going to still apply and find out?

Do you have those 2-4 IB/PE internships ? If so how did you find them ? I’ve emailed almost 500 companies with 1 acceptance into a VC
