Golf Handicap On resume
Hey guys, I read a recent post about the Interests section on your resume. The guy who posted it made a good point and says to not list things like: "Guitar, Golf, Skiing" etc. But instead say "Guitar player since Age 14, avid Skier etc.
I am a huge golfer and have been playing since I was a young lad. My handicap is a 9, and should be improving. Is this a douchey thing to put on my resume at the bottom? I just want to briefly put "9 handicap Golfer" or something along those lines.
I've thought about this as well. Played golf ever since I was 5, used to be scratch when I was in high school, now am probably a 2. Golf is a great skill to have in the industry but I don't want to come off too arrogant by listing that on my resume
I wouldn't showcase a 9 HDCP. That's not good. I would say anything under a 2 would be resume worthy. It's like putting a 2.4 GPA on your resume - just leave it as "golf" ...
I would say to not put it on there. Personally, I would stick either with something generic like "golf enthusiast" or maybe something achievement specific like "Golf (won a state championship in high school)" if it applies. In the grand scheme of things, anyone reading your resume is going to be concerned 100 times more about your relevant experience or education than your interests. Unless the rest of your resume is already perfect, there are probably better ways to focus you energy into improving it.
Think about it this way though:
If you put "9 handicap golfer" on there, anyone with little to no knowledge of golf is not going to understand what that means. It will add no value to persuade them to hire you. If the person looking over your resume does know, will a handicap of 9 come off as boasting, or is it something that is actually pretty substantial? It's probably going to depend on the person, so unless you want to risk coming off as boastful or douchey as you put it, I would avoid putting it on there.
This is so wrong it's hilarious. I can tell you clearly don't play golf. You are saying shooting in the high low 80's, sometimes high 70's as a undergraduate student is bad? You're clueless. You remind me of the same people on this board who say NYU is not a target-school...
9 HDCP is solid, but I wouldn't put it on a resume. It's good but simply not noteworthy.

if you played professional sports (but in a lower level such as minor league baseball, euro basketball, mls) you should obviously list it, but should you list any stats?
NYU is not a target school, NYU Stern is. I know more IB analysts from Stern than any other school.

This is a terrible idea. And so is that "avid skier" somehow being better than "skiing" thing. Makes no sense and only serves to make the reader hate you a little bit more.
You are a total idiot. I have played golf damn near my entire life, including 4 years in college at a mid-tier D1 program. My HDCP was a +2 through college and is about a 5 now after getting crushed by banking hours for over a year now. I am telling you that barely breaking 80 as an undergrad sucks - especially considering you were probably playing some dog shit 6,500 yard courses from the senior tees that a legit +2 would be sub-70.
Go ahead and put it on there, IDGAF. But when your resume comes across our bank's desk we will LOL at your 9 HDCP all day. Then proceed to toss it in the trash because you are clearly a delusional POS. G'day.
The only thing I put on my resume that's similar to this is "competitive videogaming." But I feel like that's more unique and it definitely was a talking point on almost all of my interviews.
In my opinion, with something like this, it's not about connecting with all the people who interview you who have similar interests like golf. Because although you and your interviewers share that interest, you're probably not that unique (think about how many golfers there are in the industry). On the other hand, standing out with something that many people don't experience with--or they haven't met many people like you--can make for a much more interesting conversation. Similar to my story, one of my friends who worked in BB IBD was a rapper on the side and his interviewers loved that.
If you're under a 5, I would put it.I got a bunch of compliments by putting mine, people like people who are good at golf for some reason.
For the scrambles at conferences. But really, golfers like people who are good at golf because they know how hard the game is and appreciate the skill it takes. Plus it means that you guys will always have something to chat about even if that is literally the only thing in the entire world you have in common.

I feel like when recruiters, analysts, etc look at my resume they see the standard stuff for an undergrad applying for IB positions - pretty good GPA, pretty good leadership and finance exposure, pretty good internship. I used to have Low Handicap Golfer as the last thing under my skills section, but my girlfriend made me feel like an idiot for including it. What do you think about that? I really am a low handicap golfer. I think it shows some personality and also fits into the culture in the banking world. After all, a family member of mine claims he got his first 3 promotions back in the day at soloman brothers over a counter part who may have deserved it more merely because the managing partner became his golf buddy and wanted to keep him around (he was a low handicapper as well).
I've actually heard of this. Not in IBD but I know of groups at the BB that hire decently smart kids who are great at talking and golf to cater to clients. I don't know anyone first hand though - only second hand stories.
It's better than most things that people list under interests. I would include it.
