so what have you guys done in the past to people that really went to bat for you and got you analyst or summer analyst or any other positions. I feel like something more than a thank you email is needed but am not sure what is appropriate and how you would send it to ones office.

a phone call is always better than an e-mail if the person really helped you out.
Hand-written thank you note, at least. I send Christmas cards to my top 25 as well.
