GS ECM vs. Barclays Cov Group

I first got a Barclays Cov Group offer and have built a solid relationship with one of the MDs in the RE group (ik they r known for industrials/RE) and potentially would do M&A modeling which would b better for PE exit opps. But recently j got a Goldman ECM offer and know the work would b different but wondering abt transferring within the division to a coverage group / how hard that is? Any advice / info that can help w this decision?

If you want to do M&A and then PE/HF for the long haul on, do Barclays. If you want to do ECM and make a long term ECM career at GS, do GS. Both are solid gigs and probably have comparable compensation at the senior levels.

I do have to say, of the people who I know who went into ECM out of undergrad, many of them are at the VP/SVP level now and were able to survive because of the somewhat better work life balance in ECM. If they're at a top BB, they're probably making more than my classmates who did IBD -> PE -> Corp Dev/F500/etc, but less than those who were able to stay in PE (and thats not many people as you would think....and I went to a top target.)
