GS Technology

I know the Tech division at GS falls under the "back office", but I'm curious how difficult it is to convert this into a front office position in the future. If you're a sophomore struggling to get into one of the big BB banking internships, would this be a route worth pursuing?

The chances of migrating from IT into Front office are very very very slim. Just look around other places for something front office.

IT at goldman will give you absolutely no relevant experience to leverage into a front office position. IT is really a position for compsci/EE oriented people and can be leveraged into other similar positions, but has nothing to do with banking other than the fact that GS is a BB/HF (I say its a hedgefund because thats where they really make their money).
