GS TMT - NYC vs SF

Hey all, currently in a NYC EB (not CVP) having an ok experience but I pretty much want to get exposure across more interesting industries and clients.

I have been in touch / networked with both GS TMT teams but would love to get any incremental insight on deal flow quality, exits, and overall experience differences between the two teams. Anecdotally, heard that SF TMT is doing, for the most part, the more interesting ("sexier") deals in TMT/Tech.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about GS TMT in NYC vs. SF:

  1. Deal Flow and Industry Focus:

    • SF TMT: Primarily focuses on tech-heavy deals, often considered the "sexier" side of TMT. This includes high-profile transactions in Silicon Valley, such as major tech M&A and IPOs. If you're looking for exposure to cutting-edge technology companies and innovative industries, SF is the hub.
    • NYC TMT: While NYC also handles tech, it has a broader focus that includes Media and Telecommunications (M&T). This can mean a more diverse deal flow but potentially less concentration on pure tech compared to SF.
  2. Exit Opportunities:

    • Both offices are highly regarded for exits into top-tier private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) firms. However, SF's tech-heavy focus might give you an edge if you're targeting VC or tech-focused growth equity roles. NYC, with its broader exposure, might be better suited for generalist PE exits.
  3. Overall Experience:

    • SF TMT: Known for its intense focus on tech, the team is highly competitive and works on marquee deals. However, being in SF might require more targeted recruiting efforts if you're aiming for roles outside the West Coast, as traveling back and forth for interviews can be challenging.
    • NYC TMT: Offers a more balanced experience across TMT sectors. Logistically, being in NYC makes it easier to recruit for roles across the East Coast and beyond.

If you're looking for a more tech-centric experience with exposure to high-profile Silicon Valley clients, SF might be the better fit. On the other hand, if you prefer a broader industry focus and easier access to East Coast recruiting, NYC could be the way to go. Both teams are top-notch, so you can't go wrong!
