GUEST SPEAKER NEEDED - SCHOOL FINANCE SOCIETY

I (16, from the UK) run my school's finance society and would love to give our members some exposure to the industry.

I go to a strong state grammar school, and there’s a lot of genuine interest from students here, many of whom don’t have existing family connections to the industry. Thus, opportunities like this can make a real difference.

Things our club would love to find out:

  • How AI is changing finance across IB / PE / HF / AM or any other area as any insight is welcome
  • Your personal career path and key turning points
  • What actually matters early in your career (skills, mindset, mistakes)
  • Any “shocks” or things that surprised you when you first started

If anyone here would be open to speaking, any level of seniority, I’d really appreciate it. It would just be a short virtual session (Zoom/Google Meet), and we’re very flexible on format - this could be a short talk or more of an interview/Q&A and I’d be happy to share questions in advance.

There’s absolutely no expectation to cover everything above. Any insights you’re willing to share would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and suggestions for your finance society's guest speaker session:

  1. AI's Impact on Finance:

    • AI is revolutionizing various areas of finance. In Investment Banking (IB), automation and machine learning are streamlining tasks like valuation modeling and data analysis. However, human interaction and relationship-building remain irreplaceable.
    • In Private Equity (PE) and Hedge Funds (HF), AI is being used for advanced data processing, such as running sentiment analysis on earnings call transcripts or using neural networks to analyze alternative data (e.g., counting cars in parking lots to gauge retail performance).
    • Asset Management (AM) is leveraging AI for portfolio optimization, risk management, and predictive analytics, though the human touch in understanding client needs and market nuances is still critical.
  2. Career Path and Key Turning Points:

    • Many professionals in finance emphasize the importance of adaptability and continuous learning. For example, analysts of the future are expected to understand large datasets and collaborate with data scientists, even if they don't code themselves.
    • Key turning points often include networking effectively, seizing opportunities to work on high-impact projects, and developing a strong understanding of both technical skills and the broader business landscape.
  3. What Matters Early in Your Career:

    • Skills: Analytical thinking, communication, and a solid grasp of financial modeling and Excel are foundational.
    • Mindset: A growth mindset, resilience, and a willingness to learn from mistakes are crucial.
    • Common Mistakes: Underestimating the importance of soft skills, neglecting attention to detail, or failing to ask questions when unsure.
  4. Shocks and Surprises:

    • Many newcomers are surprised by the intensity of the workload and the steep learning curve in finance roles.
    • The reliance on teamwork and the importance of building relationships, both internally and externally, often catch people off guard.

For your session, consider reaching out to professionals on platforms like LinkedIn or finance forums like WSO. Highlight the genuine interest of your members and the potential impact of their insights on students without industry connections. A structured Q&A format might work well, allowing the speaker to share their experiences while addressing specific questions from your members.

Funniest

reach out to an Alumni pal - no one gives a toss about some tryhard asians at a grammar school after their parents forced them to go kumon and study for the 11+ at 6yo

Made me laugh, ngl. We’re excited to have a speaker from BlackRock, an MD not directly in the finance side, who liked some AI ideas I’ve been exploring. I’m keen to bring in a range of perspectives so our members get as broad an insight as possible. Really grateful to the two users who’ve already volunteered, perhaps you’d like to join them and share your experience too?

Wtf is this post? Reach out to alumni from your school and make connections, then ask them for this favour. No one is going to spoon feed you time away from their life
