H1B Visa and IB Internship Tips

I'm an incoming student to a semi-target Canadian university (class of 2024). I've always been generally interested in finance throughout high school, and the big dream of breaking in to a great bank in NYC greatly influenced my decision to pursue a business degree (from Ivey/Queens).

However, after reaching out to alumni from my school who previously worked in top EBs and BBs in the States, they mentioned that it would be far more difficult to break into US banks after the H1B reforms and restrictions placed by Trump. Could someone offer some more insight on how exactly his restrictions have impacted Canadian to US recruiting? Have numbers decreased? Did banks which previously targeted/recruited from Canadian schools (on campus or historically) stop doing so? If so, would Biden being elected likely bring things back to normal by 2024?

Furthermore, does anyone know if there are any finance-related internships available in Toronto/Ontario area for freshmen? My dream of breaking into NYC really means a lot to me, and I really want to do whatever I can to maximize my chances for the future.

Thank you monkeys in advance! :)

Would it be safe to say internationals cannot compete for internships for next summer bc of J1 and H1-B visa restrictions?

Inaccurate. H1B restriction only temporarily forbids people from ENTERING the US with the visa. Doesn’t effect OPT/CPT which most international students use out of college and you can still apply for H1B within the states. Banks that are more supportive will still hire internationals. You can also use TN visa if you are Canadian.
