I have a friend who left after 5 months at a IB to go to Ramius Capital. I told her it was a dumb move but she is insistent in how smart it was. I have never even heard of this shop, is it good, prestigous, etc? Tell me what you know, I feel bad askign her so she does not think I am grilling her for facts to prove her wrong.

HF, they have over 10bn in capital across a variety of strategies, but try to provide low vol absolute returns using fundamental analsyis. Not saying it's the best HF in the world (there really is no best HF, just ones that provide their respective investor bases with the desired risk-adjusted returns across certain strategies). Can't even compare banking to this, if you get it you should go after 5 months of banking (unless you have other comparable HF offers which you would rather take). You will be rewarded both intellectually by the challenge and monetarily over the long-run in comparison to banking
It's a great multi-strategy shop.
There are only a few reasons to become a banker...but one of the most significant is exit opps and your friend was able to leverage 6 months of analyst hell into a solid HF opportunity.
